Biophysical Accounting of Forests’ Value under Different Management Regimes: Conservation vs. Exploitation

نویسندگان

چکیده

Forest ecosystems are important providers of ecosystem functions and services belonging to four categories: supporting, provisioning, regulating cultural services. management, generally focused on timber production, has consequences the ability system keep providing Silviculture, in fact, may affect ecological structures processes from which arise. In particular, removal biomass causes a radical change stocks flows energy characterizing system. Aiming at assessment differences stored natural capital provision, three differently managed temperate forests common beech (Fagus sylvatica) were considered: (1) forest semi-natural condition, (2) carefully get sustainable way (3) exploited without management. Natural here accounted biophysical terms. Specifically, all resources used up create (stock) maintain production (flow) different components calculated. Both emergy empower decrease with increasing human pressure forest, resulting loss diminished contribute well-being terms provision.

Nutrient uptake of peanut genotypes under different water regimes

Drought is a serious environmental stress limiting growth and productivity in peanut and other crops. Nutrient uptake of peanut is reduced under drought condition, which reduces yield. The objectives of this study were to investigate nutrient uptake of peanut genotypes in response to drought and to estimate the relationship between nutrient uptake and peanut yield under different water regi...

Evaluating management regimes for European beech forests using dynamic programming

Aim of study: This contribution describes a systematic search method for identifying optimum thinning regimes for beech forests (Fagus sylvatica L.) by using a combination of optimization heuristics and a simple whole stand growth prediction model. Area of study: Data to build the model come from standard and management forest inventories as well as yield tables from the Northern and Western pa...

Taking high conservation value from forests to freshwaters.

The high conservation value (HCV) concept, originally developed by the Forest Stewardship Council, has been widely incorporated outside the forestry sector into companies' supply chain assessments and responsible purchasing policies, financial institutions' investment policies, and numerous voluntary commodity standards. Many, if not most, of these newer applications relate to production practi...

Behavioral Patterns of Colobus in Logged and U nlogged Forests The Conservation Value of Harvested Forests

Although tropical forests cover only 6% of Earth's arable surface, they account for nearly 50% of all known species (National Research Council, 1992). Despite this diversity, these systems are increasingly threatened, as exemplified by a recent Food and Agriculture Organization report (FAa, 1999) which indicates that tropical countries are losing 127,300 km2 of forest annually; this does not co...

Global fishery prospects under contrasting management regimes.

Data from 4,713 fisheries worldwide, representing 78% of global reported fish catch, are analyzed to estimate the status, trends, and benefits of alternative approaches to recovering depleted fisheries. For each fishery, we estimate current biological status and forecast the impacts of contrasting management regimes on catch, profit, and biomass of fish in the sea. We estimate unique recovery t...
